Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and don't win most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
