Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently play against one another. Howard had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
