Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold 'Em, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free's up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an amazing collection of betting options and because you have several individuals battling for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it's not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi/lo.
