Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's initial two years were difficult as he played many hours and don't win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
