In texas hold'em, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the competitors put out a certain sum of money. 'Posting the blinds' is the commonly used phrase for this play. In the following step, the croupier shuffles the cards and deals out two cards face down to all players. A normal deck of 52 playing cards is used in the deal. After the deal, there is the initial round of wagering. This round is typically known as a "pre-flop".

After the first wagering sequence, the first card is tossed aside. This tossed aside card is called the "burn card", and this is performed to make sure that there is absolutely no dishonestly. The following 3 cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are known as 'the flop'. Now follows a second round of betting, after that the croupier throws away an additional card and turns over 1 more card onto the table. Following this, players can employ the 6th card to form a 5card poker hand.

An additional sequence of betting happens, and in many types of poker, here is where the bet size doubles. There is an additional round of tossing aside a card, and a last deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is called the "river". Bettors can now employ any of the 5 cards on the table, or the two cards that they hold, to create a five-card poker hand.

To finish it up there is another sequence of betting. After that, all the players left begin to reveal their hands. This is called the "showdown". Clearly, the bettor who has the highest hand is the winner. When competitors have even hands a splitting of the winnings is considered.

Hold'em is a simple game to understand, but to acquire expertise it requires a lot of studying.
