Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked taking part in different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and don't win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.

The real improvement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
