Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone's hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It's the best hand out of every player's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It's the very same notion in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5.
