Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender on the globe by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to learn everything he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the adverse comments from other people destroy his goal of being one of the best poker players on the planet.

He began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning period and winning wasn't a regular thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil states that he's learning every day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Although Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
